UW Libraries 2009 Serials and Electronic Resources Review

During the Spring Quarter, we advised you that an anticipated cut to the University Libraries materials budget would require a review of our journal, database, and other subscriptions with the aim of reducing our continuing obligations by up to $2 million annually. We are now nearing the end of this review and have linked a list of proposed cancellations to the Libraries Serials and Electronic Resources Review website at: http://depts.washington.edu/cdassess/feedback. The list, which is accessible to the UW community via NetId login, includes all the titles being considered for cancellation by the UW Seattle campus libraries, excluding Health Sciences. There is also a link to proposed Health Sciences cancellations.

The list can be sorted in title or broad disciplinary order, and it is searchable by title. There is a feedback mechanism where you may comment on titles you feel are essential or desirable to keep. The deadline for feedback is October 10.

Thank you for your help in this important task. If you have any questions about the 2009 Serials and Electronic Resources Review, feel free to contact your subject librarian directly:

Trial of Two New Tools to Help You Access Online Material More Quickly

The Libraries has a couple trials going on to help you get to the information you're seeking, just that much quicker.

The first tool is a Citation Linker service.
Users can enter as much of the article citation as they have and the service will link to the full-text if we subscribe to it. Links to this service now appear on the public Find It, Articles & Databases, and E-Journals pages. The trial of this service will run through August 14th.
You can also try it out here.

The second trial is actually a series of three trials for a new "link resolver". Without getting into the technical details TOO much, a link resolver basically allows us to use the links in bibliographic databases like Web of Science or Expanded Academic ASAP to direct you to our subscribed content (think of the purple "Check for UW Holdings" buttons).

You don't need to do anything differently to try out the trial link resolvers, they'll just be going on in the background. If you would like to submit feedback on what you see, we're particularly interested in:
  • Are the links clearly labeled and the displays clear?
  • Are you getting the results you expect?
  • Any differences you notice between previous "Check UW Holdings" and current?
You can submit feedback through this handy dandy form.

Limited ILL Service August 3rd and 4th

Just a heads up to plan ahead when it comes to Interlibrary Loan requests.
There will be no access to certain ILL services on August 3 and 4. As part of the harmonization of HSLIC and upper campus ILL operations the ILLiad server will be reconfigured on August 3rd. On August 4th ILL staff will be testing the new configuration. The server will not be available on those days. During the down time:
  • new requests will not be accepted
  • users will not be able to access the server to track requests or view documents
  • ILL staff will not be able to process existing requests
On a brighter note, access to Summit requesting will not be affected by the reconfiguration so you can still request materials from other Summit libraries during that time.
